Getting Started

What to expect in your first lesson

Many people want to learn a Martial Art, but the hardest thing about starting is having the courage to walk through the Dojo door. There are many misconceptions about what to expect in your first class, and this is the main reason people don't take up the opportunity to learn a Martial Art. To help dispel some of these misconceptions it is important to point out that:

  1. You don't need to be physically fit to begin training. Fitness is something you can aim to improve over-time.
  2. You don't need to be young. Many beginners start in their 30's, 40's or later.
  3. You won't be sparring Black Belts and higher grades as a beginner. We are a friendly organisation that is passionate about the fighting arts and seeing you grow as a martial artist, not a fight club that is there to boost the egos of the instructors. You will train with others at the same level as you, as you continue to grow and improve in your skills and ability.

To make joining our classes easy, we operate an open door policy. You can come along and train at any of our Dojos around the country. You can either contact the instructor in your area or if you prefer, you can just arrive at the Dojo 10 minutes before the designated training time. A gi (training uniform) is not required for your first lesson, but you will need to wear some comfortable exercise clothing; for example: shorts, track pants or similar, a T-shirt and an open mind.

If you have any injuries, please let the instructor know. It is important that you don't do anything in the Dojo that could aggravate the injury. As always, you should consult your Doctor before participating in activities if you have injuries or medical challenges.
